To the editors:

Perhaps while Mayor Daley is trying to get Streets & San to plant additional trees in our city ["Green Streets," January 19], he should try to wean that agency away from its absurd, Byrne-era overuse of road de-icing chemicals. Not only are road salts bad for cars and pavements, but they're bad for most other things they get splashed upon--including dogs' feet, tree roots and trunks, and our shoes. If Chicago would cut way down on the use of such chemicals, as most other Midwestern cities already have, we'd get wetter winters, but we'd also be assured greener, healthier springs.
