Thank you for printing Cate Plys's column on the Cook County Board's recent decision not to demolish the old county hospital [January 30]. I'm glad to see the Reader devote attention to the reform commissioners who are fighting both new county sales taxes and the destruction of the potentially lucrative and historically significant old hospital.

One minor rebuke: The headline on the cover, "Official Business: County Board capers," perpetuates an odd detachment among Chicago progressives to our local govern-ments. The headline suggests that the vigorous public debate over the fate of our old hospital is a subject for bemusement as those rascally politicians bicker away in their latest caper. I think such an important public decision--and such an insightful article--deserves a more respectful tone.
