Daddy Long Legs The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Aug. 1 2010

Staged at Leone Beach in Rogers Park, Clint Sheffer's al fresco noir for Bruised Orange manages to be utterly engaging even though the ambient noise--boom boxes blaring hip-hop, etc.--works against its Roaring Twenties gangland setting. Two low-level Chicago mobsters, Bobby Widdle (Sheffer) and Mars Streznick (John Arthur Lewis), meet on the beach to dispose of a stiff and hash out their differences regarding Bobby's wife, Jane (Alison Connelly). There aren't many surprises, but Sheffer has a ball with hardboiled dialogue and cheap puns, and John Morrison's staging keeps the action sharp. Not even an incipient thunderstorm threw the cast off their clench-jawed rhythms on the afternoon I saw the show. --Kerry Reid
