Dance Black America

Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker directed this 1983 documentary about a four-day festival held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The film includes a historical survey of the black dance tradition that begins with cakewalkers filmed by Edison in the 1890s, passes through the specialty dancers of the 20s and 30s, and culminates with footage of the Alvin Ailey company.
