Dances With White Girls, DJ Jordan Z Recommended Soundboard

When: Fri., Feb. 13, 9 p.m. 2009

Dance music has always thrived on hybridization, and blending heaping helpings of genres is practically the norm these days—it’s hard to find someone adhering strictly to one style. But even in such an environment, the work of New York DJ and producer Dances With White Girls stands out as exceptionally heterogeneous. Take “GirlsBug,” from last fall’s EP New Crack Swing (Throne of Blood), which starts off sounding like a new-wave song remixed by a Baltimore house DJ, adds rubbery synth bass, then segues into an unexpected ambient bit before coming back on a tweaky acid-house high. And that’s one of his easier tracks to parse—most of the others are more complicated (though no less exciting). Jordan Z opens. —Miles Raymer
