Bette Davis won her first Oscar for playing an alcoholic actress (rescued from the brink by Franchot Tone) in Alfred Green's 1935 film—although Hollywood tradition has it that the award was more of a consolation to Davis for not being nominated for her 1934 tour de force, Of Human Bondage. Then as today the academy was stronger on hindsight than insight.
