Guitarist Matt Schneider has been a steady but shadowy presence on the local jazz and improvised-music scene since the late 90s. Early on he recorded with Toe 2000 and the Exciting Trio, among others, but for much of the past decade he's primarily played in fleeting projects that have never released any music and rarely gig—here's hoping his involvement in Josh Berman's new quartet yields some consistent dividends. Schneider has been easy to miss a lot of the time, and based on his recent online-only release for the cool digital label Candy Dinner, he's got plenty to offer. The all-acoustic effort in the label's new numbered solo series, CNDY DINR, deftly mixes free improvisation (imagine Derek Bailey at his spikiest) with composed melodic fragments that unspool into tuneful single-note runs and split the difference between rural folk music and jagged postbop. For this performance, his duo with bass clarinetist Jason Stein will adapt a similar methodology, mixing free improv with composed material. —Peter Margasak A trio of Daniel Fandino, Nick Mazzarella, and Frank Rosaly headlines; Schneider and Stein open.
