Local singer-songwriter Daniel Knox writes beautiful piano numbers that've been called "cinematic"—and surely not by coincidence, he's also a projectionist at beloved art house the Music Box, reputedly the only place in town that can still screen 70-millimeter prints. Last week the theater hosted the Chicago premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson's new film, The Master, in its full 70-millimeter glory, and Knox played a small role, spending a few hours helping with the extensive preparations necessary for the screening. Knox has a new album in the can and even more material written; he opens for the Handsome Family at Saki Records on Thu 9/13. He's also working on finding new places to host Black & Whites, a suite of his songs that he performs to accompany a photography exhibit by John Atwood.

Electronic-music auteur Chris Shively (aka Chrissy Murderbot) is preparing his first release as Chris E. Pants, a new persona with an ear for disco and deep house. Pants's debut 12-inch is called "Doggy Style," and its center label bears a portrait of Shively's dog, Bubbles. The record is already funded via Kickstarter, but you can still preorder it through Thu 8/30.

The Burlington turns five on Sat 8/25, but the bar isn't trying very hard to hide its age—in fact it's throwing a blowout party starting at 2 PM that afternoon, featuring a phalanx of hot Chicago talent! Don't come a-knockin' unless you wanna get to rockin'—bands helping the Logan Square hot spot celebrate include a bevy of Gossip Wolf faves, among them Bloodiest, Rabid Rabbit, Cave, E+, and Lasers and Fast and Shit. The $7 cover charge also gets you a limitless supply of Pabst Blue Ribbon and food by Honky Tonk BBQ. We smell a rager!
