Danny and the Deep Blue Sea The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 28 2013

In a drab Bronx bar, two strangers strike up a painfully personal conversation. Danny (Brandon Galatz) is fresh from beating a complete stranger to a pulp, and Roberta (Jodi Kingsley) is struggling to keep sane after moving back in with her parents. The punch line? It's love at first fight. Under director K. Hannah Friedman, Kokandy Productions' revival of John Patrick Shanley's 1984 play is full of energetic psychological sparring and exuberant acting. The two sets—the bar and Roberta's bed—are sparse, leaving little for the characters to interact with (or break) aside from each other. The script can bump into old tropes about hurried affections and the healing power of love, but the hope of escape through romance is also what keeps the play, and both its characters, afloat. —Hannah Gold
