Dark Cities

Multiple narratives intertwine on the mean streets of Mexico City in this 2002 feature by Fernando SariƱana, adapted from Juan Madrid's short-story collection Chronicles of Dark Madrid. Among the characters are warmhearted hookers, dirty cops, a pharmacist with a thing for little girls, a father who accidentally kills his infant, a woman who can't stand to relinquish her late husband's body, and a gentle teenager driven to rape by his macho father's contempt. SariƱana creates some genuinely touching moments, and his narrative sleight of hand is impressive, though the overstuffed story line tends to hold the characters down to the level of melodrama. In Spanish with subtitles. 113 min.
