Dark of the Moon Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through June 29 2014

A "witch boy" falls in love with an Appalachian girl and makes a go of being human in this 1941 folktale by Howard Richardson and William Berney, who were inspired by "The Ballad of Barbara Allen." If you're looking for a subtle, multifaceted depiction of hill folk, you'll have to look elsewhere; here, they're all mean, moonshine-chugging religious fanatics. In New American Folk Theatre's production, directors Jamal Howard and Anthony Whitaker and their cast of 14 make an admirable effort to take the characters seriously, but they can't avoid sliding into caricature. The Americana tunes performed by the cast during party scenes and set changes are the best part of the show; I kept wishing they'd abandon the script and throw a hoedown instead. —Zac Thompson
