Dark Streets

Adapted from a stage musical, this charmless fantasy tries to recapture the mix of hot jazz and cold cynicism that lit up Chicago, adding a dash of punk for good measure (one of the tough guys has a Mohawk). The mustachioed owner of an art deco nightclub (Gabriel Mann, who looks like he'd get carded at his own place) tries to hold off a loan shark and decide between an upper-class angel in satin (Izabella Miko) and the blowsy dancer he once knocked up (Bijou Philips). The title refers to the rolling blackouts that plague the city and lead the hero into a Chinatown-style political intrigue. Rachel Samuels directed. R, 83 min.
