Darlin' Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Recommended Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 13 2014

This engrossing, starkly honest new play by Joshua Rollins focuses on two women in small-town Iowa: Clementine, a wife and mother who holes up in a cheap motel after walking out on a life she feels trapped by, and Dee, a motel maid stuck in an abusive relationship. With rigorous integrity, the play steers clear of preachiness and melodrama while insightfully exploring depression and domestic violence. Director Ilesa Duncan's staging for Step Up Productions is superb on all counts, with first-rate performances by Elizabeth Birnkrant as Clem, Elizabeth Antonucci as Dee, Bradford R. Lund as Clem's husband, John Wehrman as Dee's battering boyfriend, Jake Carr as an amiable young drug dealer, Todd Michael Kiech as the motel manager, and Robert Hardaway as the guy with whom Clem finds temporary emotional refuge. —Albert Williams
