Darwin's Nightmare

The title of this rambling but fitfully disturbing 2004 documentary refers not only to the Nile perch—which has decimated the marine biology of Lake Victoria in Tanzania over the last four decades—but also to the native people, whose world has been poisoned by the European entrepreneurs who introduced the fish. In the press notes director Hubert Sauper captures the film's feverish tone with his recollection of sitting “in the merciless equatorial sun surrounded by a million Nile Perch skeletons, trying not to go mad.” 107 min.
