Dave Attell The Short List (Theater) Recommended Critics' Picks Brief Run (Theater)

When: Fri., Nov. 19 and Sat., Nov. 20 2010

Whether he was getting high in an Amsterdam teahouse or cussing out customers at Chicago's Wiener's Circle, Dave Attell brought dissipation to the masses on his Comedy Central travelogue, Insomniac With Dave Attell. The excess takes a darker turn in his stand-up, which he honed in New York clubs in the 1980s, before gigs on SNL and The Daily Show turned him into a 90s late-night staple. Influenced by the likes of Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, and Don Rickles, Attell's no-holds-barred humor can be nasty, even off-putting, but it's hilarious, in a hate-yourself-while-you-laugh sort of way. A year after the tsunami in Indonesia, he called the disaster "God's money shot," and hosting this year's Adult Video News Awards he described the Middle East as a place where "no one has sex, but everyone smells like they just kinda did." Ironically, the bad boy redeems himself on the USO circuit, entertaining the troops with his cleanest jokes. --Marissa Oberlander
