Dave Tompkins discussion and signing Free

Former columnist for the Wire Dave Tompkins will discuss his new book, How to Wreck a Nice Beach: The Vocoder From World War II to Hip-Hop—The Machine Speaks (Stop Smiling Books/Melville House), about the contraption that’s mutated from a wartime speech scrambler into a pop music instrument. An afterparty at the Charleston (2076 N. Hoyne) starts at 9 PM, with books for sale at a discount and DJ sets from Tompkins, Dante Carfagna, and Courtland Green, and Tompkins will sign copies at Dusty Groove beginning at 4 PM on Saturday.
