David Copperfield

The Dickens novel is given the Irving Thalberg treatment and emerges as a tastefully dull movie (1935), enjoyable mainly for the Pirandellian casting of W.C. Fields as Micawber, Basil Rathbone as Murdstone, Roland Young as Uriah Heep, and Edna May Oliver as Aunt Betsy. Director George Cukor manages to slip in a few bits of style while Thalberg is looking the other way, but otherwise it's slow going. 130 min.
