David Dorfman Dance

David Dorfman, a Chicagoan now based in New York, is noted for his community projects in 17 states and two foreign countries, including Out of Season: The Athlete's Project, which he did several years ago at the Dance Center of Columbia College. So it's appropriate that Columbia called him in for The Move Project, a piece celebrating the transition from the Dance Center's old space in Uptown to its new facility in the South Loop. Watching excerpts performed by 20 community members, I was impressed by Dorfman's ability to use their talents rather than taxing them and to elicit their thoughts and feelings about moving on. Beginning with folk dancey steps set to klezmerlike music, the performers form a line across the rear of the stage, crossing downstage one by one and offering some often humorously banal reflection on moving. One very pregnant dancer intones, "I am moving awkwardly," while another dancer, apparently very taken with her abilities, arrives downstage center saying, "I'm moving to the front because I'm the best." Then, traversing the stage in various ways--slowly, quickly; alone, in tandem; with great good humor or great effort (two performers rowing like galley slaves transport a third person wielding a whip)--they seem to illustrate the many ways of traveling through life. Perhaps most comical and touching is one dancer's observation that moving isn't always a choice but that if you don't move, "people assume you're dead." Also on the program is the Chicago premiere of a piece about the influence of rock music on American life. Thursday, October 26, through Saturday at 8 at the Dance Center of Columbia College, 1306 S. Michigan; $20. Call 312-344-8300 for tickets and information.
