Davis Redford Triad

Steven Wray Lobdell flashed on the name for his instrumental combo, the Davis Redford Triad, in the middle of a nervous breakdown at Heathrow Airport. The pairing of Miles Davis and Robert Redford, he realized, contained every duality in the universe --"the good, the bad, the soul, the soulless." The Triad certainly isn't the first band to owe its name to an altered state of consciousness, but few others can induce such a state so effectively. Its most recent album, last year's Blue Cloud (Holy Mountain), is as woozily sensuous as side three of Electric Ladyland: Lobdell, who also plays with the Krautrock institution Faust, pours liquid melodies over layers of feedback, backward guitar, and swirling electronics. The live record Code Orange (Holy Mountain), recorded in 2002 and including some of the same material, is heavier and more manic; Matthew Freid's thunder-lizard fuzz bass lumbers through the dense underbrush of Jeffrey Helwig's drumming, and Lobdell's guitar leaps over all of it, stuttering and howling. For this tour the band has recruited fourth member Jef Brown, formerly of Jackie-O Motherfucker, on guitar, sitar, and saxophone. The Triad opens the second night of Adventures in Modern Music, a festival curated by the Empty Bottle and British music magazine the Wire. Lasse Marhaug (see below) plays second, followed by Ssion and Gift of Gab (see below). Thursday 23, 9 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, 773-276-3600 or 800-594-8499, $15.
