Days of Wine and Roses

Blake Edwards's somber 1962 study of alcoholism striking the perfect American couple (Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick in a superb performance) is a long way from The Pink Panther and his other comic masterpieces. But Edwards's attention to detail pays off; while this isn't his best film, it is far superior to most problem dramas of the early 60s. The first part of the film, telling the story of the couple's courtship in an alienating San Francisco, is better than the bathos and slow descent of the second. With Charles Bickford and Jack Klugman. 117 min.
