Dead Beetle | Chicago Reader

Dead Beetle

Trite, superficial, and meandering, this piece of pop sociology from the Czech Republic proves that nonconformity can be just as dull as conformity. Martin, an aspiring actor in Prague, spends his waking hours boozing, snorting, dancing at raves, and chasing after an ex-girlfriend. After landing in a mental hospital he's befriended by an innocent young woman, and their halfhearted romance drags on forever, set to a sound track of Nirvana retreads by the republic?s cutting-edge bands. First-time director Pavel Marek (who also wrote the script) captures the noisy, grimy milieu of the city?s clubs and cafes, but he barely penetrates the malaise afflicting his wandering Gen-X kids.
