Dead Man's Shoes

A Death Wish for the pub crowd, this low-budget English revenge drama (2004) by Shane Meadows is a big disappointment after his wry, good-humored Once Upon a Time in the Midlands. Paddy Considine (who collaborated with Meadows on the script) plays a soldier returning to his Derbyshire hometown to stalk and execute the goons who terrorized his retarded younger brother. A shocking revelation near the end explains the soldier's nihilistic rage but simultaneously tears a gigantic hole in the plot, leaving little to admire but Considine's typically penetrating performance. 87 min.
