Deadmau5, Crookers, Late of the Pier, the Whip, Zebo, Willy Joy, Brad Owen, the Loyal Divide, Noise Floor Crew Recommended Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: 2009

The opening bit of “The Bears Are Coming,” one of the singles from this English band’s debut, Fantasy Black Channel (Parlophone), is a clattering, goofy mishmash of faux-ethnic drums, thumping bass, and burping synths that made me think Late of the Pier were trying to be some kind of crazy digital-era Talking Heads. But that impression evaporated shortly after lead singer Samuel Eastgate opened his mouth—he seems to want to sound sort of like Damon Albarn and sort of like the guy from Franz Ferdinand, just like every other male vocalist in England right now. Then I heard the rest of the album and realized the band’s just trying to sound like digital-era Gary Numan, which Gary Numan has already done better.
