Dealin' With Idiots

80 minutes 2013

A famous comedian, played by writer-director-star Jeff Garlin, aspires to make a movie about kids' baseball and conducts interviews with the eccentric parents of his son's teammates, giving us the chance to both watch a tedious comedy and learn how it came to be. Surprise is the spark of laughter, which may explain why this seldom generates any: almost every scene utilizes the same stale formula (bizarre self-revelation from the respective parents, shocked underreaction from Garlin), and the ensemble cast is heavy with improv warhorses (Bob Odenkirk, Nia Vardalos, and the inevitable Fred Willard). Their characters are aggressive and weird, but hardly idiots, which makes you wonder if Garlin came up with the title before shootin' the movie.
