Dear Mr. Fidrych | Chicago Reader

Dear Mr. Fidrych

Growing up in Michigan, Mike Cramer saw rookie pitcher Mark Fidrych lead the Detroit Tigers to a stunning victory over the New York Yankees in 1976; the episode inspired this semi-autobiographical drama by Cramer, who now lives in Oak Park. A 12-year-old Tigers fan mails one of his poems to the baseball star; three decades later the poet, now a disgruntled Chicago advertising executive (played by Cramer), hopes to cure his mid-life slump by hitting the road with his own young son to find Fidrych. Cramer devotes too much screen time to the hero's childhood, and the middle section sags. The last half hour is the best, largely because Fidrych is so authentic and appealing. Sadly, he was killed in an accident in 2009.
