Dearly Departed Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 28 2012

Funerals are never fun, and some bring out the worst in those the deceased left behind. In David Bottrell and Jessie Jones's 1991 dark comedy, we indeed get the worst from friends and relatives of Bud, the departed Turpin family patriarch. Bereaved Bible-thumpers and boozers are played with high energy and nuanced timing in Kevin Wiczer's Circle Theatre production, bringing laughs and cringes with mentions of a church mission to "teach African women to wear brassieres" and a miscarriage in a KFC bucket. Will Nifong is, well, explosive as Reverend Hooker, whose Mexican-food-induced digestive issues highlight the funeral scene. But between those memorable bits, the script goes flat and corny. —Marissa Oberlander
