Deiphago, Hellfire Deathcult, Sacrificial Massacre, Luciferum, Dead Shore Recommended Soundboard Image

When: Sun., Aug. 30, 7 p.m. 2015

Terrifying black-metal trio Deiphago—which formed in the Philippines and relocated to Costa Rica about a decade ago—just dropped their fourth full-length, Into the Eye of Satan (Hells Headbangers). Reviewers seem divided on whether the production style further muddies the already bloody waters or enhances their chaotic wall-of-death sonics—guitarist Sidapa’s high-wire electrocution sound is particularly crisp, for example—but one thing is certain: you will be battered hard by stiff currents of riffage as you spelunk under still-viscous murk. There’s a free-wheeling, improvisational quality at play here, but drummer Savnok’s inhuman discipline holds it all together in a way that makes disorienting sense. I’m giving extra points to the majestically disturbing cover art, which with its visceral, bloody colors and grimly hypnotic oppressiveness is as good a visual representation of the sound as I can imagine. Don’t say they didn’t warn you.
