Family-run taqueria and tequila bar.
On Halsted between Nightwood and the Skylark, there's a little storefront without a sign. You should go in. It's more of a bar with small plates than a straight-ahead restaurant—the menu's drinks side certainly seemed bigger than the food side. Best bet on the former is the pepino margarita: with its cucumber-y freshness and lime-and-chile salted rim, this drink is sunniness in a glass. Another standout for us was a house specialty, the Carne Apache, what our served described as "meat ceviche," served with tortilla chips. The champiniones borrachos ("drunken mushrooms") was also a favorite—think of it as queso fundido with roasted poblano peppers and tender mushrooms. I also enjoyed the lechon taco, another house specialty, with its chunks of pork, soft and salty garlic nubs, and pineapple pieces. This is a great spot for drinking and snacking or winding down an evening. Dessert's available—but a hibiscus margarita and a very sippable San Matias Gran Reserva were a preferred finish for us.
