Deliver Us From Eva

This battle-of-the-sexes comedy by Gary Hardwick (The Brothers) is so stale and complacent it could be a rerun of Love American Style. Gabrielle Union—the only reason to sit through this—plays Eva, a beautiful but pugnacious city health inspector whose sway over her three sisters extends to policing their romantic relationships. Hoping that some good lovin' will distract Eva, the sisters' Milquetoast men offer five grand to an infamous ladies' man (LL Cool J) if he can seduce her. Most excruciating are intermittent beauty salon scenes featuring two stridently unfunny hairdressers: a big-bootied nympho (Kym Whitley) and a mincing gay man (Royale Watkins). The end credits are followed by a bit in which the latter reveals that he's only posing as gay to keep his job, an idea that must have been too clever to use in the movie. 105 min.
