Departure Lounge The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 12 2010

Dougal Irvine's one-act musical is set in the airport at Malaga, Spain, during a purgatorial flight delay. Returning home from their last holiday together before starting university, four high-spirited English lads fill the empty hours in the departures terminal with roughhousing, revisiting the vacation (during which they each had character-revealing interactions with the same rather tarty Australian girl, who appears in flashbacks), and breaking into confessional song and N'Sync-esque dance. It's not a lot to hang a show on, but Irvine's catchy pop score and the rambunctious energy of Tom Mullen's Bailiwick Chicago staging make Departure Lounge hard to resist. Despite some shaky singing, an immensely appealing cast put themselves over with cheeky aplomb. --Zac Thompson
