Deranged | Chicago Reader

Grave, spacey Roberts Blossom in an obscure chop-'em-up from 1974, about a backwoodsman who goes on a killing spree when his beloved mother dies by drowning, untidily, in a bowl of split-pea soup. It's a slaughter comedy of the Romero school, though directors Alan Ormsby and Bob Clark don't have Romero's underlying seriousness: the big joke here is a nerdish, trench-coated narrator who enters the action from time to time to elucidate the finer moral points.
