Sportswriter Gregory Peck impulsively marries fashion designer Lauren Bacall, and a battle of the brows ensues—high against low. In this 1957 film, director Vincente Minnelli is basically translating the art versus entertainment theme of his The Band Wagon (1953) into situation comedy terms. The extra personal element adds some depth to the conventional goings-on: with Minnelli, good taste is a moral issue. Peck, though more limber than usual, is hopeless, but Bacall is perfectly cast. A solid, enjoyable film—accomplished, but short of major work.
