Desperate Affection Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through June 17 2012

There's not much I can say about this two-character dark comedy without ruining the M. Night Shyamalan-esque twists. It starts with talkative actress Maddie (Lise "Kat" Evans) sprucing up her apartment for her seemingly perfect boyfriend, Richard (Jim Saltouros). Their watered-down Hepburn-Tracy shtick is fun for a bit. But then Richard's great, big flaw is revealed, and a world of implausibility opens up. Evans and director Fred Wellisch paint Maddie as being so in love that she accommodates information that would kill any real relationship—though maybe she holds on because Richard is the only human who can bear her nattering. A pedestrian, off-stage deus ex machina keeps Maddie from losing her last bit of morality. That's trumped, though, by an inexplicable, last-second devil ex machina. —Asher Klein
