Frantically paced, brutally overlit, and jammed with hyper-glib dialogue, this ham-fisted high school satire manages the neat trick of being more unbearable than high school itself. Screenwriters Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo incorporate elements of the slasher (a masked serial killer stalks the hallways of podunk Grizzly Lake High School) and the time-travel fantasy (a taxidermic bear serves as a portal to the past); probably because the cliquish characters are so flat, there’s nowhere to go with them. As a director, Kahn specializes in music videos, though he has made one previous feature, the 2004 hot-rod actioner Torque. When I looked up our review I discovered that I’d written it, though I have no recollection of the movie now; here’s hoping I get lucky again. With Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Dane Cook.
