Devil Land The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through April 6 2014

The sound of a rattling chain appropriately kicks off UrbanTheater Company's production of Desi Moreno-Penson's disturbing 2007 play about things that go bump in the night. That rattling comes from 12-year-old Destiny, who's been kidnapped by Beatriz and Americo, a childless Latino couple, and chained to a bed in their basement. If this seems a touch heavy, Moreno-Penson's dialogue offers a surprising amount of humor in a show where themes of punishment and penance go hand in hand with religious fanaticism, suppressed pedophilia, and guilt, guilt, guilt. Like any good fairy tale, the villains get theirs in the end via a gruesome visit from Destiny's imaginary friend the Grinch. (Yes, that Grinch.) Jasmin Cardenas Bible beats with aplomb as Beatriz, Christian Castro's sex-starved Americo is likeable and terrifying, and Tricia Rodriguez beams as Destiny. But in the end, it's the Grinch who steals Christmas. —Chloe Riley
