Devil May Care Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 17 2012

Kendall Sherwood's slow drama gives us two desperate small-town residents—a morose spinster and a disillusioned pastor—in a church, after hours, up to no good. Alternately (and interchangeably) suspicious and empathetic toward each other, the two embark on what Wishbone Theatre Collective seems to regard as a white-hot examination of faith that actually comes across as a load of discursive rhetoric. For people who fancy themselves modern-day Jobs, they communicate surprisingly little urgency—especially the pastor, who can't seem to accept the idea that members of his congregation (gasp) sin. John Mark Sawyer and Denise Smolarek build some tension in their attempts to chew through Sherwood's circular dialogue, but not enough to save the audience from a tedious visit to the pews. —Dan Jakes
