Devils Don't Forget Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays and Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through Feb. 25 2012

Judging by the stylized cruelty and atmospheric weirdness of this Mammals production, the imagination of writer-director Bob Fisher isn't a place I'd want to live. But visiting it is a thrill. Buster is suffering from amnesia and a set of head wounds that look suspiciously like missing horns. A pair of thugs (played with chilling malice and dopey tenderness respectively by Don Hall and Gabe Garza) try to extract a MacGuffinish memory from him, leading to a creepy underworld torture scene straight out of Grand Guignol. Buster's fourth-wall-breaking intermezzi add little to the already thin narrative, but the superb cast and moody aesthetics impart plenty of momentum to Fisher's hallucinatory tale. —Keith Griffith
