Devin Keast, Gentleman and Sunshineface

When: Fridays. Continues through May 28 2010

As an improviser, Devin Keast can display a likeable combination of boyish midwestern charm and sharper-than-average intellect. But he brings only the charm to this barely coherent, 55-minute solo show. Although he toured it last year, the piece feels like it's still in the early workshop phase: unconnected, underdeveloped character sketches rarely pay off. A rich, affected socialite chuckles smugly while thanking famous people for coming to his cocktail party. A doddering high school music director dances goofily--twice--as his orchestra plays Do Your Ears Hang Low. Slow pacing is exacerbated by long blackouts after each piece, during which Keast exits and re-enters for no discernible reason. --Justin Hayford
