Dinner With the Family Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays, 6 p.m. Continues through Dec. 28 2012

Start with bumbling Prohibition-era mobsters butting heads in a Chicago pizzeria, add a five-course Italian meal, girl fights, and a lethal whodunit, and you've got more highs and lows than you can wave a Thompson machine gun at. But the result, in this interactive dinner-theater show from the Family Shoe Players, is too Jersey Shore and not enough The Untouchables. Highlights of the muddled, marinara-soaked evening include Greg Seidler as tanked crooner Al Martini and John "Sloop" Biederman as Detective Elliot Mess of the "Unrefundables." Between bouts of witty banter and song, though, lapses of direction and energy create chaos. The cast could also use better comedic opportunities than debating the merits of deep-dish vs. thin-crust pizza and Cubs vs. Sox. —Marissa Oberlander
