Dirty Ho

100 minutes 2013

Essentially a comedy, this Shaw brothers-produced kung fu film from 1979 is lighter and more irreverent than most of the studio's work from that era. Lau Kar-fei (familiar to Western audiences from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films) stars as a prince who poses as a wine and antiques merchant. After encountering a cocky young jewel thief at a brothel, the prince takes him under his wing to teach him the finer points of martial arts. Most of the film's fight sequences are cleverly staged humorous riffs on the usual fisticuffs, as the royal tries to conceal his martial arts prowess but still defend himself. Lau's stone-faced determination toward this end is hilarious. With Yue Wong as the thief of the title. In Cantonese with subtitles.
