Dissolution

Los Angeles indie Nina Menkes (Phantom Love) traveled to Israel for this eerie, low-fi update of Crime and Punishment. The impoverished protagonist (Didi Fire) murders two old women in his Tel Aviv apartment building, then spends the rest of the movie stewing in his own foul juices; his crime takes place entirely offscreen as the camera lingers in the hallway, studying the woman's front door, and a radio somewhere in the building fails to obscure the violent scuffle inside. As with Phantom Love, Menkes favors crisp black-and-white photography and hypnotic compositions, her unblinking stare and dense, evocative soundtrack adding to the sense of waking nightmare. In English and subtitled Hebrew.
