Divided States of America: Laibach 2004

If I didn't know that the Slovenian industrial band Laibach actually exists, this video documentary might've seemed like an elaborate joke, but it's all too real. Director Saso Podgorsek shot the work during an American tour that launched days after the 2004 presidential election and uses interview footage with rabid fans and a taxi driver to express contempt for the U.S., suggesting that Laibach—whose heavy-handed music has long embraced fascist imagery with convenient irony—could teach us a thing or two. The poorly shot and recorded concert footage seems to be an afterthought. 70 min.
