Django Unchained

Rated R 165 minutes 2012

Quentin Tarantino follows his head-turning World War II adventure Inglourious Basterds with another exercise in pop-culture provocation, turning the old western hero Django into a freed slave who sets out to rescue his wife from bondage in the antebellum south. Like the earlier movie, in which Jewish-American soldiers assassinate Hitler, this one draws heavily on minority group revenge fantasy, the only difference being that the trick isn't as impressive the second time around. Nor are there as many good oddball characters, the action being largely relegated to Jamie Foxx as Django, Christoph Waltz as the German bounty hunter who frees him, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the nefarious plantation owner who holds the woman. With Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and cameos from Bruce Dern and Don Johnson.
