Double Booked Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through May 28 2014

Based on every performer's worst nightmare, this one-act starts with the conceit that Molly Miller and Clare Theole's solo shows have accidentally been booked for the same night. And they couldn't be more different: Miller's explores depression, abuse, and eating disorders, while Theole's is an homage to 90s pop culture. Since the farcical setup sets the tone for humor, it feels jarring when the bulk of the performance proves to be dark and dramatic. Most of the 90s bits, like an Olsen Twins song, feel trite, though one that gives us Theole's school presentation on Tonya Harding gets laughs even as it reveals her own difficult childhood due to illness and cruel classmates. While unexpected, Miller's deeply personal solo sections, like a letter to her younger self about suffering sexual abuse, are authentic and fearless. —Marissa Oberlander
