Doubt Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 5 2012

Thanks to the film adaptation starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, most of us are already familiar with the gimmick behind John Patrick Shanley's lauded 2004 play: the central question—whether a priest at a Catholic grade school had ill designs on a student—goes unanswered. Shanley's sparse narrative skates by on the gravity of the subject and the script's supposed boldness in leaving the mystery unsolved. But an audience nursed on TV procedurals may take that boldness as sloppiness, given that the play whizzes past so many avenues of exploration. Why, just for example, doesn't anyone talk to the boy? Derek Bertelsen's production for AstonRep is competent but unilluminating; as the priest, Robert Tobin lacks the very authority that Shanley sets out to critique. —Keith Griffith
