Down and Derby Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through Dec. 8 2012

Larkin City, Ohio (don't bother looking it up), has been devastated by a tornado. Hundreds are dead, and the survivors aren't doing so well, either. Sisters Lily and Rose, 20-ish and unmoored, decide that the appropriate response is to start a women's roller derby team. The idea catches on with nine other lost souls, and before long the Larkin City Misfit Mavericks are blocking and jamming their way into the hearts of their fellow citizens—though success, of course, brings its own complications. Receiving its world premiere on an worn basketball court, this New Colony show is lots of fun as long as the ladies of the club keep hoofin' it around the track. But the story line is a clumsy, committee-written thing that subsides into familiar tropes at every opportunity. Ditto the characters. —Tony Adler
