Down and Dirty Romeo and Juliet New Review (Theater and Comedy)

When: Mon., May 16 2011

Performed in a rotating lineup of bars, Shattered Globe Theatre's version of the Shakespeare classic displays an admirable scrappiness. But even as director Roger Smart avoids the common mistake of taking the borderline-farcical story too seriously, he also turns the gimmickry dial up to an uncomfortable setting. The actors all know several parts and are cast by the audience at the outset, which is fun. Other overtures to audience participation, however, go nowhere. Montague and Capulet name tags and invitations to the Capulet ball feel like a middle-school teacher's attempts to engage. --Keith Griffith
