For 2010's Shame, Shame, Philadelphia's Dr. Dog ditched their homegrown recording setup and with it some of their endearing shagginess. The album's richer, plusher production might have looked like a sign that Dr. Dog were mellowing a decade into their career, but for the new Be the Void (Anti-) they returned to their home studio and a scrappier sound. They're still clearly in debt to the Beatles and the Beach Boys, but those influences pass through a thick indie-rock veneer—Dr. Dog seem especially fond of a cracked overload that recalls the Flaming Lips. The band isn't nearly as overwhelmingly grandiose as Wayne Coyne and company, but that doesn't make all the congas on Be the Void any easier to digest. Thankfully the hooks come fast and furious, so there's not much time to get hung up on misfires. —Peter Margasak Purling Hiss opens.
