Dracula Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through March 6 2011

Steven Dietz plays fast and loose with Bram Stoker's classic Victorian vampire novel, for better and for worse. While doing away with most of the original's hysterical sex-phobia and misogyny, Dietz's 1996 stage adaptation also deprives it of its psychological resonance. All that's left is a bloodthirsty guy with intermittent clairvoyance and a keen fashion sense. Still, if you discount the cheeseball ending, there's a compelling horror mystery here, as Lenny Wahlberg's aptly starchy, good-humored Idle Muse Theatre Company production proves. Wahlberg's stalwart cast play it straight without melodrama and light without camp. Even in a preview performance beset with technical glitches, they found truth in the grotesque passions of an overcooked plot--no easy trick. --Justin Hayford
