After writing and producing for 15 years, Joseph L. Mankiewicz began his directorial career with this 1940 gothic romance from Fox, in which Gene Tierney is menaced, a la Suspicion, by sinister husband Vincent Price. Never a strong visual stylist, Mankiewicz overcompensates here by laying the atmosphere on with a trowel. As always, he seems to enjoy the insane complications of his plot—perhaps All About Eve is more gothic than we thought. With Glenn Langan, Walter Huston, Spring Byington, and Henry Morgan (a fateful meeting). 103 min.
